Depends on the age of the kid. There’s a song from Les Mis which is sung by Gavroche, who is about 10 yrs old. It’s called "Little People" and talks about the big things little people can accomplish. I’d give it a listen — it might be a bit rough for the intended audience, but it could probably be cleaned up (there might be a "hell" or "damn" in there that you might want to edit).
There’s also a couple of numbers from the Music Man intended for the character Winthrop, who is also about 8 or 10. The one that I can think of is "Gary, Indiana".

When I was a girl I took voice lessons for a few weeks and the teacher made me learn "Castle on a Cloud" from the show Les Miserables. It’s about a little girl who is singing about a place where is wants to be. It’s a really great song for a girl to sing. You can find the lyrics and midi file for it at hamienet I believe. It’s one of the best children’s songs in broadway.
