Like "London Bridge Is Falling Down" and "Ring around the Rosy" and "Rock A Bye Baby". There are probably more, but I can’t think of any others right now. All 3 of those songs talk about either tragic historical events or something tragic, if you think about it. It’s the SAME story with "Jack and Jill"!
Do you really think that people should sing these nursery ryhmes to kids?
More Information:
Yes! I’ve always thought the same thing about old american folk songs, and after giving it some thought, I think that this sort of dark humor was common when death and injury were also something much more real to even small children. For example, not only did deaths occur more often, but the dead were laid out in the home. It was seen as a much more normal part of the life cycle. Perhaps our culture prepared young children for this through rhymes and songs. Anyways, I’m no expert, but I’ve asked myself the same question, and that’s what I’ve come up with. Should we sing and say these things to our children? Why not? I’m in the bandwagon against being overprotective, and I heard many of these things my entire childhood and never gave them a second thought.
haha wow i never thought about that. they just sound so innocent. but they are classic so i think they shouldnt die off
Probably because many of them allude to historical events of some kind and were sung in a cute way to children so that what happened could be passed down through generations.
This is a guess.. but it makes sense.
Humpty Dumpty too.
anna, i wouldent really count an egg falling off a wall devastating. but good try lol
