"Jabberwocky" – or try something by e e cummings or Ogden Nash
The Road Not Taken, by Robert Frost. Tell tell how the roads symbolize chioce/decisions we all have and make in lfe, and how we cannot go back to that "fork in the road" again. Also tell them that the speaker in hte poem made some unconventional choice (the road less travelled), but it is unclear just which that unconventional choice was. It may not be a humorous poem, but your teacher and classmates will both approve.
You might have a hard time discussing a funny poem in class, depending on what your teacher expects from that discussion. But one fun poem I thought of was "Macavity: The Mystery Cat" by T.S. Eliot. I don’t know what you could discuss from it though. If you don’t mind poetry that is a little bit dark, you might try some of Edgar Allen Poe’s poetry. Also, if you don’t mind poems that are sometimes a little gross, check out Charles Baudelaire. I think both Poe and Baudelaire write poetry that is fairly accessible. Also I might suggest that you ask your teacher what he/she is looking for in your discussion. Good luck!
Not Waving but Drowning
Nobody heard him, the dead man,
But still he lay moaning:
I was much further out than you thought
And not waving but drowning.
Poor chap, he always loved larking
And now he’s dead
It must have been too cold for him his heart gave way,
They said.
Oh, no no no, it was too cold always
(Still the dead one lay moaning)
I was much too far out all my life
And not waving but drowning.
Stevie Smith
Interesting point: Stevie Smith is a woman who took on the male pen name to gain more respect. This poem points out the apathy of man kind and how we are all focused on taking care of number one, even if it is very simple to save someone else’s life, we generally won’t go out of our way to do it.
