Listening to my kid’s CD today and realized how funky the lyrics were. Ring around the rosie and London Bridge… Jack and Jill…. EEP. LoL
I know what they all mean (most have to do with history…ex Black Plague)
But why do we still sing them to our kids?
Thanks Emina! What an awesome answer!
More Information:
In most cultures, nursery rhymes are verbally passed down from one generation to another. Most of the children’s tales and rhymes were passed down so the children would learn the lessons of history. Many did not read and books were very hard to come by and in many cultures banned. For example, Ring Around The Rosie – The Black Plague,
London Bridge – The collapse of the original bridge due to overcrowded housing on it, and Jack and Jill (originally Gill) relating to old measures of liquid: 2 jacks= 1 gill, etc
We still sing them to kids because it’s just tradition, I guess.
